Uruguayan Defender Juan Izquierdo Passes Away After On-Field Cardiac Arrest
Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo tragically passed away following a cardiac arrest during a Copa Libertadores match against São Paulo FC on August 22. The 27-year-old defender collapsed in the 84th minute of the game and was immediately rushed to São Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital, where he was placed in intensive care. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Izquierdo succumbed to complications from an arrhythmia after five days. His club, Nacional, announced the heartbreaking news, and tributes poured in from around the football world.
Luis Suárez, Darwin Núñez, and other prominent figures expressed their condolences, with São Paulo FC and Internacional Miami offering heartfelt gestures of solidarity. The football community mourns the loss of a talented player taken too soon.
